North American Model United Nations was founded in Toronto in 1985, introducing university-level Model United Nations to Canada for the first time that year. His Excellency, Mr. Stephen Lewis, then-Canadian Ambassador to the United Nations, gave the inaugural address on February 13, 1986, and subsequently sat on the Board of Governors for NAMUN. A fast-expanding and ambitious conference, NAMUN soon garnered support and sponsorship from the University administration and many respected businesses. The Dean of Arts & Science, including Dr. Marsha Chandler (Dean, 90-97, Ph.D. UNC-Chapel Hill), also threw the weight of the Faculty behind the conference.
Amongst our previous distinguished guests, we have been honoured with dignitaries such as Stephen Lewis, Brian Tobin and Preston Manning. Through our distinguished keynote speakers, international visitors become educated and exposed to Canada’s depth, political and social positions within the global community.
Several prominent Canadian organizations, such as the Jackman Foundation, the Canadian Institute of International Affairs, Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt (a premier Canadian law firm) and Saffer Advertising (a renowned marketing firm) have all offered invaluable support and endorsement for NAMUN over the years. With strong backing, an ambitious mission and an all-important mandate, NAMUN has grown into one of Canada’s preeminent model UN conferences.
NAMUN has historically attracted delegates from across North America, Europe & Africa, and we anticipate a culturally and politically diverse delegation for the upcoming conference as well. The Gala Dinner, unique amongst other Model UN conferences, is traditionally held at the Great Hall of Hart House (the university’s student center), one of the oldest student centers in North America. The Gala Dinner brings together all conference participants, with an evening of fine dining and live music, culminating with a keynote address by a prominent member of the University’s world-class faculty or a member of Canada’s active political scene. In addition to the Gala Dinner, NAMUN’s one-of-a-kind crisis nights have always brought together the best of wit, humor, and witty repartee while the evening socials are also planned with the delegates in mind, offering everything from cozy pub nights to club nights at the some of the best clubs in Canada’s business and financial capital of Toronto.
