United Nations Security Council: Yemen’s Humanitarian Crisis

Email: unsc@namun.org

Since 2014, Yemen’s people have been embroiled in a devastating civil war. The war has dealt a sizable blow on the government’s ability to protect its citizens, regulate the economy and provide public services, leaving Yemen’s social fabric in a state of ruin while exacerbating the already fragile economic conditions of the country. And as a result, over 150,000 people have been killed, with more than 300,000 dead due to hunger, lack of healthcare, and obstruction of aid.

However, a significant development occurred in March of 2023 when, with the assistance of China, the Saudi-led coalition and the Iran-backed Houthis agreed to a détente. Recognizing the importance of this development, The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has now been given the opportunity to address Yemen’s humanitarian crisis and to aid in the post-war recovery process. Given the nature of the situation, this committee will operate with a limited backroom, allowing delegates to focus on the debate and legislation brought forth during committee sessions.

Subtopics include, but are not limited to;

  • Addressing challenges related to humanitarian access and ensuring equal access to aid,

  • The reconstruction of essential infrastructure, particularly with regard to sustainable development strategies,

  • Exploring ways for regional actors to support peace and stability in Yemen

NAMUN strives to uphold an inclusive and equitable environment in its academic debates and sanctioned social events. Due to the implications on an equitable and respectful conference setting, discussions regarding ongoing military conflicts are strongly discouraged at NAMUN 2024.

UNSC: Yemen’s Humanitarian Crisis is set in September 2023. Thus, the usage of information that arises after September 2023 in committee session is out of order. Specifically, any discussion regarding the 2023 Israel–Hamas war in committee setting is prohibited, and strongly discouraged at NAMUN 2024.
